Gadgets

I’ll admit, even though the whole point of social media is to blast out messages to many people at a time, there are times when someone will come up to me and say, “Hey, I saw your post on Facebook!” and I’ll be completely surprised that they noticed my post. Sometimes we post out of boredom, sometimes annoyance, and sometimes rage. Well, there is a website out there created to show people just how easy it is to see what you’re saying online.

On WeKnowWhatYoureDoing.com, you can see main topics that are social media no-nos, but people are still caught posting them anyway. The site doesn’t shy away from posting incriminating messages from actual people, either. This website might seem like an invasion of privacy, but the posts featured on this site are pulled from PUBLIC profiles.

So, moral of the story, watch what you say online, because someone is always watching.

Thanks to vistatecnologica for the tip!

Facebook might have changed something about your profile without you even noticing. Lifehacker gives the details on Facebook’s sneaky move.

Facebook launched its own email service back in 2010, which was promptly forgotten by everyone. This morning, Forbes noticed that they removed everyone’s email addresses from their profiles, replacing them with an @facebook.com email address instead (not Facebook’s internal email address which they use for notifications and password resets, just the one listed on your profile). Luckily, it’s easy to get your old email address back on your profile:

  1. Click “About” on your profile and scroll down to your email address. Click “Edit” to change them.
  2. Click on the circle next to your Facebook email address and change its setting to “Hidden From Timeline”.
  3. Click on the circle next to your other email addresses and change their settings to “Shown On Timeline”.
  4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the Edit popup (Don’t forget this step).

If people primarily got your email address through your Facebook profile, following these steps is something you might want to do. Even if it doesn’t bother you, feel free to spread this around in case you have friends that might disapprove of this.

What do you think of Facebook’s stealthy change?

I stopped playing with my Nintendo DS Lite a long time ago, but I always like hearing about new Nintendo products. Well, this is sorta new, but Nintendo just announced the Nintendo 3DS XL. Obviously, the “XL” indicates it will be bigger than the original 3DS with larger screens. IGN provides a few more details about the handheld.

The system’s top screen is 4.88 inches, giving an extra 90% view area. The lower screen is now 4.18 inches, also providing an extra 90% view area.

The new 3DS will have longer battery life, but an AC adapter won’t be included with the system in order to keep costs down (it will be available for purchase separately). Adapters from previous Nintendo hardware will be compatible.

The system will be released in white, red/black and silver/black color schemes on July 28th in Japan. A Western release date has not been confirmed.

The story is developing, but what do you think? Would you buy this new system?

So I was watching the pilot episode of Girls on HBO On Demand, and after liking the episode, I grabbed my phone to tell the masses how much I liked it, via Twitter. I was stumped as to why no new tweets were loading when I opened the app, and why my tweet wasn’t sending. I thought it was just a problem with my phone and decided to try again later.

Cut to an hour later, and I find out Twitter was down for everyone. There was even a trending topic on Twitter about what happens when Twitter goes down. So, here’s what people had to say about the whole debacle. Enjoy.

Ever thought about how quickly we get tired of gadgets, especially when those new iPhone announcements come rolling around? Thought Catalog takes a look at the work of Brooklyn-based artist Henry Hargreaves addressing that issue.

“I’m as guilty about getting excited about the latest Apple product,” says Hargreaves. “I see a connection between tech and fastfood culture, both are fetishized, quickly consumed then discarded.”

The approximately 245 million cell phones in the United States, for example, have an average lifespan of 18 months, with 900 million already put out to pasture. About 150 million are retired each year, and in an interview with the Environmental Protection Agency, Seth Heine CEO and President of Collective Good, estimates that only 30 million of those are actually recycled.

While the deep fried gadgets below are just replicas, it sure is some food for thought about consumer culture!

Hypable just posted video featuring official first gameplay of Dead Space 3.

Electronic Arts has released just over 20 minutes of gameplay footage for the upcoming Dead Space 3.

The footage showcases the game’s new features, enemies and boss encounters. Some of what is show is repeated from the title’s showing during EA’s E3 press conference unveiling.

Dead Space 3 is scheduled to release February 2013.

I am a fan of the first two Dead Space titles, and was scared out of my mind playing them. Here’s hoping that the third installment is just as good!

I’ve always had a problem with Internet Explorer still existing, and often feel stupider every time I accidentally open the browser. Well, it turns out it’s not just casual Internet surfers that dislike the browser, according to The Huffington Post. Kogan, an Australian online retailer, is charging customers for using the outdated browser.

Shoppers who use Internet Explorer 7 to purchase items on the website are charged a 6.8 percent tax on top of their order total. To circumvent the extra fee, Kogan customers are encouraged to install a better browser, or upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer.

“The way we’ve been able to keep our prices so low is by using technology to make our business efficient and streamlined. One of the things stopping that is our web team having to spend a lot of time making our new website look normal on IE7,” the tech supply company stated in blog post.

Do you think more retailers should follow in the footsteps of Kogan?

Have you ever thought about the angle at which a Macbook is tilted in an Apple Store? This may seem like a trivial detail, but anyone walking into an Apple Store at opening will find all the laptops tilted at exactly the same angle. This is partly for aesthetic purposes, but there is also something Apple is hoping you’ll do after the employees tilt them at a certain angle.

The Apple Store pays attention to every detail. You might think that Apple positions all its notebook computers for aesthetic reasons. That’s partly true. The tables are uncluttered and the products are clean. But the main reason notebook computers screens are slightly angled is to encourage customers to adjust the screen to their ideal viewing angle—in other words, to touch the computer! It’s also why all computers and iPads in the Apple Store are loaded with apps and software and connected to the Internet. Apple wants you to see the display for yourself and to experiment with apps and web sites to experience the power and performance of the devices. Customers in an Apple Retail Store can spend all the time they want playing with the devices and using the Internet—nobody will pressure them to leave.

The rest of the article is great, so you definitely head on over to Forbes to find out more. And the next time you step into an Apple Store, make sure you notice that tilt!

Earlier I posted about some of the new things Apple revealed at WWDC 2012, and that included iOS 6. Well, word on the street is that the popular emoji keyboard will be updated as well, and will include brand new icons of gay and lesbian couples.

As you can see, these icons join heterosexual icons, including one of a heterosexual family. Looks like a whole lotta love is gonna be spread with these new additions!

What do you think of the new icons?

In case you didn’t hear, Apple revealed some big news this week. In fact, multiple “big news” items were revealed, so it’s understandable if you weren’t able to keep track. But fear not, as below are highlights of WWDC 2012, provided by Engadget.

Next-get Macbook Pro with Retina Display

It packs a Retina display with a 2880 x 1800 resolution (or 220ppi), and a casing that measures just 0.71-inch thin and weighs 4.46 pounds. In addition to that high resolution, Apple is also promising higher contrast ratios, better viewing angles and reduced glare compared to other laptop displays, and it’s updated all of its stock apps to take advantage of those extra pixels, not to mention Aperture and Final Cut Pro — “reading your mail is like reading fine print,” according to Apple’s Phil Schiller. As for the other specs, you’ll get up to 16GB of RAM, NVIDIA Kepler GT 650M graphics, up to a quad-core 2.7GHz Core i7 processor, a maximum 768GB of storage (SSD, naturally), and a promised seven hours of battery life with 30 days standby.

OS X Mountain Lion

The latest version of Mac OS X is coming in a matter of weeks, and will set you back just shy of twenty bucks. If any of those new beastly, Ivy Bridge-decked machines made you reconsider your bank balance, breathe a (small) sigh of relief — you’ll be treated to a free upgrade if you decide to buy one before Mountain Lion arrives in July.

iOS 6 Revealed

What’s new? Well at least 200 things! Most notably, Siri has gotten a little make over, including the ability to launch apps, more knowledge of sports, restaurants and movie times, it’s also coming to iPad. There’s better Facebook integration too, with photos, websites, maps and more getting the instant share option — you can even “like” or share app from the Appstore. Other tweaks on the phone side of things let you dismiss incoming calls with a swipe, or send a pre-written SMS, even set it to give you a reminder once you change location.
